The Zimmer Durom Cup, approved by the FDA to be marketed in the United States in 2006, has been implanted in more than 12,000 patients. The Durom Cup is an artificial hip component primarily used in Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) surgeries. The procedure is done to relieve hip pain from arthritis, fractures or injuries, and normal wear and tear in the joint that comes with age. Unlike traditional hip replacement parts, the Zimmer Durom Cup is made from a single piece of cobal chromium alloy and is designed to provide a better range of motion and stability to help active adults recover quicker.

In 2008, Dr. Lawrence Dorr, a renowned Los Angeles orthopedic surgeon, contacted Zimmer when he began noticing a higher-than-average failure rate in his patients who had received the Zimmer hip replacement cup. Many of his patients complained of constant, excruciating pain and other complications many months after surgery. In these cases, post-surgery examinations showed that the Durom Cup failed to bond with the host bone which resulted in the implanted device slipping out of position. Additional hip surgeries were often required to correct the problem.

When Zimmer ignored Dr. Dorr’s warnings of the Durom Cup’s high-failure rates, he publicly announced his findings to other orthopedic surgeons at a physicians’ conference in April 2008. In July 2008, Zimmer, the nation’s largest artificial joint producer, announced it was temporarily suspending sales of the Durom Cup in the United States. Since that time, Zimmer refuses to admit that there is a defect with their product and has argued instead that American physicians are to blame. Zimmer suggests that additional training should be provided to surgeons in order to more precisely and successfully implant the Durom components.

Patients who have had hip replacement surgery and are concerned that they may have received a Zimmer Durom Cup are urged to contact their surgeon or hospital. If you or a loved one suffer from constant pain from hip replacement failure, please contact the Monsour Law Firm for a free case evaluation.
