Douglas C. Monsour was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in May of 1969. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and political science from Rice University in 1991, and in 1994 received the Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law, where he was published in the Texas Tech Law Review and was chosen to the Executive Board of Editors of the Texas Tech Law Review. Doug was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1994 and is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas.
Doug is certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law, and has also earned the designation of Board Certified Civil Trial Advocate from the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Doug spends a significant portion of his time trying cases in both state and federal court. The types of cases he has tried include: defective drugs, wrongful death, medical malpractice, severe personal injury, automobile and 18-wheeler accidents, train wrecks, and insurance cases. Doug has been inducted into the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, and in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009, Doug was selected by the Texas Monthly magazine as one of the "Rising Star" Lawyers in Texas. In 2009, the month he turned 40, Doug was informed he had been selected as a "Super Lawyer."
Doug has served as lead lawyer in a large group of Fen-Phen cases against American Home Products/Wyeth involving heart valve damage and pulmonary hypertension caused by the diet drugs Pondimin and Redux. He is also representing numerous Vioxx victims against Merck, Zyprexa victims against Eli Lilly, and Bextra Victims against Pfizer. In April 2008, Doug was appointed by United States Federal Judge Don Middlebrooks to serve on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee of In re Trasylol Litigation. In this capacity, Doug has traveled across America and to Europe investigating the conduct of Bayer concerning its drug, Trasylol. On top of these cases, Doug is actively prosecuting Avandia, Zimmer Durom Cup, and Reglan cases. In addition, he is handling several severe injury cases involving the trucking industry, chemical manufacturers, insurance carriers, and drunk drivers.
In 2004, Doug served as lead lawyer in two very significant Fen-Phen cases against pharmaceutical giant Wyeth. In the first case, Wyeth hired world famous defense lawyer Dan Webb of Chicago's legal giant Winston & Strawn to defend them. In the third week of the trial, Wyeth relented and settled for a confidential sum. In the second case, Wyeth retained Houston mega-firm Vinson & Elkins to defend them. Wyeth relented again just before closing arguments, and settled for a confidential sum.
In 1998, Doug was admitted to the Pro Bono College of the State Bar of Texas for his significant contribution of legal services to those who have financial difficulty obtaining legal services. He is a member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, East Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Gregg County Bar Association and Northeast Texas Bar Association. Doug is a frequent lecturer on the topic of pharmaceutical cases. He has spoken at Texas Tech School of Law, numerous seminars, and to various trial lawyer organizations.
Away from the office Doug spends time with his wife, two sons, and daughter. His hobbies include hunting, movies, outdoor activities, and coaching T-ball, soccer, and basketball.
